Borges, Lucas; Ohio University Wind Symphony; Trachsel, Andrew

Color + Light is the second commercial release from the Ohio University Wind Symphony, and features seven diverse works that explore and stretch the timbral possibilities of the wind band. The album contains two world premiere recordings: Viet Cuong’s dramatic “Sound and Smoke” as well as Dana Wilson’s “Concerto for Trombone,” featuring faculty trombonist Lucas Rego Borges. Two works take their inspiration from painters: Michael Markowski’s impressionistic “Monk by the Sea,” and Michael Daugherty’s “Winter Dreams.” Also included is a setting of Bach’s “Brich an, o schones Morgenlicht” (“Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light”) from the “Christmas Oratorio,” which serves as the basis for David Biedenbender’s majestic “Luminescence,” and Daniel French’s colorful “The Descending Blue.” The Ohio University Wind Symphony is dedicated to the performance of outstanding repertoire from the world’s greatest composers. The group regularly commissions and premieres new music, collaborates with a wide range of composers, conductors, and performers, and engages in recording projects. The first collegiate wind band to perform in Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the group makes its debut in February 2017 at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall. In his role as Director of Bands Andrew Trachsel serves as conductor and music director of the Wind Symphony.
