Johanna Bordewijk-Roepman (1892-1971) was a many-sided composer. She was not only versatile and talented, but also self-willed and original. The Sonata 1943 for Piano Solo was performed already during the war many times. Bordewijk-Roepman had dedicated the work to the pianist Nelly Wagenaar, who frequently performed it after the liberation, not only in the Netherlands but also in England and America. The sonata however, received it's premiere on one of the so-called "zwarte avonden" (black evenings). This was the name given to the illegal house concerts, organized throughout the Netherlands during the German occupation. The sonata received an award from the government in 1946. When in 1952 the pianist Paul Kurpershoek played teh sonata in Leiden, a critic wrote: "The sonata, written in 1943 by Johanna Bordewijk-Roepman, received the rendition this well-composed and interesting work deserves. It was apleasure to become acquainted with this work - it certainly deserves a place in the Dutch concert repertoire."
