CHARLES RICHARD-HAMELIN

This release is the first volume of the 2015 Chopin piano Competition winners. It follows the first series, which dates back to the 2010 competition, which received resounding accolaides. This volume features Charles Richard-Hamelin, who won second prize. Canadian Charles Richard-Hamelin attracted international attention right from the beginning. Polish Radio 2 wrote: “I had been waiting for such a performance since the beginning of the Competition. He is every inch the artist, an extraordinarily mature musician who focuses on the beauty of Chopin’s works, which he performs with a high degree of consciousness. He is one of the few who can find a wise balance between the spirit of Chopin and his own individuality, which he demonstrated, for instance, in his masterful interpretation of the Ballade in A flat major.” At the competition, Richard-Hamelin was the only one of the ten pianists who chose to play the Concerto in F minor, which set him apart from the pack. The subtle interpretative challenges of this particular work usually only appeal to a special sort of artist.
