UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA OPERA ENSEMBLE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA GIRARD

Choir Practice: A Comic Opera in One Act, takes place in a community hall in Vancouver in the mid-1980s. As the motley crew of characters prepare for a national competition, comic conflicts ensue. Composer Stephan Chatman, C.M., D.M.A., is a popular Canadian composer. He has been presented with numerous awards, and is Professor of Composition at the University of British Columbia School of Music. “Choir Practice’s overriding theme is the transformative power of music; it makes its point through a dialectical mix of materials encompassing a wide range of musical and comedic ideas.” (David Gordon Duke, Vancouver Sun) This recording is performed by the University of British Columbia Opera Ensemble under the direction of Nancy Hermiston, and members of University of British Columbia Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Jonathan Girard.
