ASTI RUTHERFORD, JAMES RUTHERFORD

Franz Schubert’s Schwanengesang is different than his two ‘true’ song cycles in several ways. Schwanengesang is actually a compilation of two sets of songs, to texts by Heinrich Heine and Ludwig Rellstab. When Schubert wrote out his manuscript, he did not include title pages or numberings. He only dated the work August 1828. When the cycle was released posthumously in October 1828 by publisher Tobias Haslinger, he titled the work ‘Swan Song.’ Because of the uncertainty surrounding this work, performance practice has greatly varied through the years, with certain songs being left out, other works being included, and the order of the songs changed. For this recording, baritone James Rutherford and pianist Eugene Asti have elecvted to stay as close to original performance practice as possible.
