Previous recordings of his have been named Disc of the Month in Gramophone, ‘Essential Recording’ in BBC Music Magazine, and ‘10/10’ on ClassicsToday.com; Sudbin has released recordings of three of Rachmaninov’s concertante works, as well as Medtner’s three piano concertos. For this album, he chooses pieces from both composers.; Sudbin has chosen six of Sergei Rachmaninov’s renowned preludes to be included in this recording, including ‘Alla marcia’ in G minor (Op. 23 No. 5) and the respected Prelude No. 12 in G sharp minor.; Opening the disc is a wide selection of composer Nikolai Medtner’s solo piano music. Beginning with the Prologue from Stimmungsbilder, which was composed when Medtner was only eighteen years old, Sudbin beautifully captures the intricacies and emotion entwined in these pieces. The section also includes three of Medtner’s Fairy Tales, and concludes with Sonata Tragica, composed just before Medtner left Russia for good in 1921.  Price: $28.98 |
