Diana Damrau has triumphed as Violetta Valéry in La Traviata – a role she first dreamed of singing when she was just twelve years old – at a number of the world’s leading opera houses. Among them is Paris’ Opéra Bastille, where in June 2014 she starred in this sumptuous production by film director Benoît Jacquot, which takes inspiration from the paintings of Manet. Conducted by Francesco Ivan Ciampa, it is presented on this DVD release from Erato, which joins a DVD of Verdi’s Rigoletto, with Damrau as Gilda, recorded in Dresden and released in 2010, and the recent CD release of the soprano’s spine-tingling interpretation of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, recorded live in Munich.
