PLATT VAN EVERA MULLER WISTREICH

Atalanta Fugiens exudes the air of its time. It is beautiful and strange, and must be full of meaning. But what is that meaning? The question was a teasing one even to the contemporaries of Michael Maier (1569-1622), which today we are no closer to answering. Although Maier called his pieces “fugues”, they should not be confused with the fugal form of Bach and his successors. The form was dictated by the symbolism of the classical myths that inspired him. Singing the fifty fugues are two sopranos, Rachel Platt and Emily van Evera, tenor Rufus Müller, and bass and director Richard Wistreich.
