In his famous 1720 pamphlet Il teatro alla moda, composer Benedetto Marcello satirized the excesses of newfangled Venetian opera as espoused by Vivaldi and others. Each of the qualities he mocked, from cadenzas and virtuoso variations to popular dances and sound effects, has provided the inspiration for this new release from Gli incogniti. Vivaldi's experiments, his spontaneity, his juxtapositions and contrasts served only one rhetorical cause: the theatrical dimension of his instrumental music.
