Pierne: Orchestral Works, Vol. 2
Vol. 2 of orchestral works by the romantic/impressionist frontiersman Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) once again feature the playing of the BBC Philharmonic under Juanjo Mena and pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet. The first volume, released five years ago, was “a delectable aperitif” (American Record Review). Earlier gems include the Fantaisie-Ballet and Poème Symphonique. Cathédrales (1915), evoking scenes of devastation from WWI, and Paysages franciscains (1919), offering more airy and impressionist music with obvious signs of ‘modern’ influences, are fine examples of his later works.
