Medtner & Scriabin Piano Concertos

Pianist Yevgeny Sudbin believes both the Scriabin and Medtner concertos on this disc are ‘absolute masterworks – unjustly underperformed and constantly underappreciated’. He compares the two ‘radically different’ works, composed 45 years apart by near contemporaries: “the young Scriabin’s concerto may appear conventional compared to his later works, but it still sounds more experimental than the later Medtner Third”. Support for Mr. Sudbin comes courtesy of the Bergen Philharmonic, which under chief conductor Andrew Litton has repeatedly proven itself in Russian repertoire.
