Acclaimed tenor Ian Bostridge particularly renowned for his insightful and sensitive performances, is in fine form in these three major Schubert song cycles. Alongside his affecting interpretation of Die Schöne Müllerin and deeply felt Winterreise is his celebrated Schwanengesang, which won praise for its “marvelously haunting expression” (Gramophone). This three-disc set includes a bonus DVD of Winterreise with pianist Julius Drake, a unique dramatization of Schubert’s terrifying and deeply-moving portrayal of human desolation with studio sets, actors, costumes and props lending the song cycle a new close-up dynamism. The DVD also includes the documentary film Over the Top with Franz, a humorous look at the difficulties of bringing Winterreise to the screen. Celebrated pianists Mitsuko Uchida and Leif Ove Andsnes as well noted conductor Antonio Pappano, here on piano accompanying Mr. Bostridge, feature as well.
