A true innovator of modern jazz, pianist and composer Thelonious Monk has written some of the genre's most recognizable pieces, including 'Hackensack,' which, along with a handful of other original compositions (such as 'We See' and 'Locomotive') and standards like 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,' appear on this LP. One of his earlier releases, Monk features the unusual combination of Sonny Rollins on tenor sax with Julius Watkins on French horn. Monk is joined by separate sets of musicians for these tracks Percy Heath and Willie Jones completed the band on the Rollins/Watkins sessions (tracks 5-7), while Art Blakey, Ray Copeland, Frank Foster and Curly Russell joined Monk for the other session (tracks 1-4).
