A new spin on the familiar, as the Concerto Köln have again incorporated new perspectives on preexisting ideas into Bach’s compendium of Baroque orchestral literature. To that end, here, as with their recording of the orchestral suites, the ensemble chose the low tuning pitch of a1 = 392 Hz for their recording of the Brandenburg Concertos. As to the “Fiauti d’Echo” called for in No. 4, a newly constructed “double flute” possibly known to Bach is the answer. Another particularity is in the use of differing and specific modern replica harpsichords as well as use of the violone.
