Catalog: CHAN 0804
Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge; James; Nethsingha
Composed by: Tomkins, Thomas
The Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge has been a cornerstone of the great English choral tradition since the 1670s. Here, complemented by several pieces for organ, they perform, under their director Andrew Nethsingha, sacred choral works by Thomas Tomkins (1572-1656), a pupil of William Byrd and one of the most accomplished and versatile English composers of his era, a total mastery of contrapuntal technique and expressive intensity being hallmarks of his style. Canticles from two of Tomkins’s Services are included (the Third and Sixth), as are four verse anthems and four full anthems.
