Live recordings from the Blues Alley in Washington and the Jazz Standard in New York City with Matt Penman (b), Reuben Rogers (b) and Gregory Hutchinson (dr): "Joshua Redman is one of the most present jazz musicians of the last 15 years, which says a lot about him - not only about his natural flow as an improvisation artist and his strength as a bandleader, but also about his willingness to use words to represent jazz outside (New York Times) "This album is dedicated to all those who, anywhere in the world, at any age, regardless of identity, affiliation or conviction, set out every day and night to listen to jazz live," writes Joshua Redman in the liner notes. "You are the witnesses of this music; you bear witness to the moment. You are there. You were there. You made it possible. You made it happen. You are the occasion. You're the point." With the new Nonesuch album Trios Live Redman shows himself again in a trio, and this in two combinations: On the recordings from the Jazz Standard, New York, he can be heard with drummer Gregory Hutchinson in the company of Matt Penman, while in the Washington Blues Alley Reuben Rogers has taken over the bass. The result is an energetic trio live album with three original compositions and some interpretations of, well - not quite standards. So not only Monk's Tinkle Tinkle can be heard in a brilliant interpretation, but also Brecht / Weill's Moritat (Mackie Messer) from the "Threepenny Opera" and a highly light-footed version of Led Zeppelin's rock epic The Ocean. On Trios Live you can hear Joshua Redman in perhaps his strongest form: As a tremendously playful improviser in a small ensemble, who is able to fully enjoy his freedom, but can also withdraw discreetly. Joshua Redman is regarded as one of the most versatile contemporary saxophonists, who is always searching for new ways both in his repertoire and in his sound spectra. As the initiator and artistic director of the SFJAZZ Collective, Redman has set milestones in jazz, as he did in his collaboration with Brad Mehldau, with his innovative album Compass (2009), on which he combined two independent trios, and with the ballad album Walking Shadows (2013), which showed him for the first time with orchestral accompaniment and was recently awarded the ECHO Jazz 2014
