Jazz versions of classical works date back to Benny Goodman in the 1930’s (Bach Goes to Town). In Russia, Leonid Utyosov’s orchestra not reworked themes by Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. By the end of the 20th century, however, the flavor of novelty was nearly lost. Sergei Zhilin’s trio’s new work Tchaikovsky in Jazz: The Seasons (reworked by Yuri Markin) wants to show that the idea of ‘jazzifying’ classical compositions is not just alive, but able to deliver surprising results.
