Legendary French flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal was born in Marseille, France, in 1922. He began playing the flute at age 12 and went on to study at the Conservatoire de Paris. After he left conservatory, he was in high demand among various European composers. He began touring internationally in 1953, and in 1955 he was named the Principle Flute at the Paris Opera. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Rampal was widely popular in the US and Japan, and he toured the United States annually. Rampal died in May of 2000. To celebrate Jean-Pierre Rampals legacy, Erato is releasing a brand new 3-CD compilation of the 20th century flute giant, featuring the best and the most popular pieces of flute repertoire.
