Today it seems naturally that the cello stands in the foreground as a solo instrument - in the late 17th century it was quite different: Although there was the cello in one of today's similar design, the idea was completely new to use it not only as a continuo instrument. Especially in Bologna there were early cello virtuosos who always took pleasure in new facets of the instrument. Mood and tonal range were not at all as homogenous as today. In his new recording the ensemble Bassorum vox plays early cello music which shows the history of the cello as a solo instrument.
