Like many fine instrumentalists who decide to take up conducting, Mstislav Rostropovich has had mixed success with his efforts on the podium. Certainly he knows what he wants, but the real question is: can he communicate this to an orchestra effectively? In this case, the answer is yes. These are dark, heavy, intensely "Slavic" performances, quite recognizably "Russian" in their seriousness and intensity. The LPO, usually London's most slovenly orchestra, seems wholly committed to the cause. At the price, this is a very fine set, and well worth it. --David Hurwitz |
