Born to a musical family, Kehrer started to study music at an early age but later became a mathematics teacher. After a long break, he returned to his music studies. After Kehrer won First Prize at the All-Union Competition of Music Performers in 1961, he achieved his long-awaited fame. In 41 years of performing activities, the pianist gave over 2,000 concerts and taught at the conservatories in Tashkent, Moscow, and Vienna. Living at the junction of Russian and German cultures, Kehrer included in his repertoire Viennese classics and Russian composers. However, he always showed a preference for romanticism.
