The Belceas prove a predictably classy act in Bartók. There is plenty of high-wire excitement, and the intricate interplay between the quartet’s members is often dazzling. Yet I’m not sure I have ever heard so sheerly beautiful a rendering of this music. Getting the drama across at the same time as making sounds of such refinement is no mean feat, and one that the Belceas more than master.
