The Ysaÿe Quartet recently announced that, after enjoying a highly-successful thirty-year performing career, the group would disband in January 2014. To conclude their long partnership, the quartet has scheduled a series of concerts over the next fourteen months focusing primarily on the music of Beethoven. This recording, featuring a quartet from each of Beethoven's major periods, launches the group's celebration of a life in music. The String Quartet No.16 is a fitting valediction to both their career and to this recording, with its famous motivic question, "Must it be?" answered with an emphatic - and positive - affirmation.
