Works for Cello and Piano

Canadian Gary Hoffman is one of the outstanding cellists of our time, combining instrumental mastery, beauty of sound, and a poetic sensibility. Hoffman gained international renown upon his victory as the first North American to win the Rostropovich International Competition in Paris in 1986. Hoffman first connected with pianist David Selig at the competition and the two have been close friends and collaborators ever since. Combining forces on this new project for La Dolce Volta, Hoffman and Selig present the works for cello and piano by Felix Mendelssohn. In addition to the two Cello Sonatas, the disc includes the Variations Concertantes, Op.17, the Albumblatt Op.117 and the Song without words in D Major, Op.109 To add to the album's authenticity, Hoffman plays a 1662 Nicola Amati cello that was formerly in the possession of Count Mathieu Wielhorski, a friend of Mendelssohn's and the dedicatee of his second cello sonata.
