9-CD set! The focus of this edition is probably Lugansky's cycle of all works for piano and orchestra by Rachmaninov. Lugansky literally throws himself at the breakneck cadenza in the first movement of the First Piano Concerto and virtually devours it, just like Rachmaninov in his own recording. Lugansky also prefers a fresh, forward and unsentimental interpretation of the solo part in the Third Piano Concerto, as well as the lighter cadenza in the first movement, which the composer (such as Horowitz and Martha Argerich) also preferred, as opposed to the more difficult chord-based alternative to which most younger pianists feel compelled
