This ain’t no ordinary trumpet recording! After discovering several excellent trumpet solos and trios that Rafael Méndez composed but never recorded, David Hickman saw the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the master. Méndez’s sons were supportive of the project, allowing Hickman to arrange and publish several works from the library. Thus, from the 22 pieces here, six solos (The Elf Trumpeter, Lullaby, Zandunga, Blue Waves, To My Mother, The Knight Trumpeter) and two trios (Kiko, Jumping Bean) appear as first recordings. In addition, the CD premieres Hickman’s duet arrangements of La Virgen de la Macarena and Zigeunerweisen, a duet arrangement of Méndez’s Habanera, and a sextet arrangement of The Lightning Trumpet.
