The first act is truly perfection, with its succession of triumphant melodies. Count on Oscar Straus to make the other songs just as memorable, sometimes in a conversational style championed by his contemporary, Leo Fall. This recording, rightly, reprises the better songs in the third act…The score is further peppered with tasty morsels like ‘Pardon, Pardon, Pardon’… The lyrics by Rudolf Bernauer and Leopold Jacobson are quite funny… The singing is quite good in this radio transcription. Johannes Martin Kranzle is the fine Bumerli, and the Nadina of Caroline Stein is also good. John Dickie…is quite puffed-up and humorous as Alexius…The other ladies in the ‘Tiralala’ finale, Martina Borst, and Gertrud Wagner, execute it perfectly. © 2012 American Record Guide
