Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688-1758) - like Graupner and Heinichen - stands in the shadow of composers such as Vivaldi, Bach and Telemann, and for a long time he attracted little attention from music historians. It is thanks to Hugo Riemann and his studies of several Fasch overtures around 1900 that he is now recognised as one of the most important innovators in the transitional period between Bach and Haydn. What is particularly striking is his synthesis of Baroque and Classical styles with the gradual addition of "modern" elements. Within the framework of traditional forms, Fasch developed the foundation for a new musical language.
Fasch made use of his excellent relationships and often exchanged sheet music with Pisendel in Dresden and Graupner in Darmstadt. Thanks to that many of his compositions survived in those two libraries. Most of the works that Il Gardellino recorded for this CD are held in Darmstadt. An interesting line up of the instruments combined with a great sense for sound and the individuality of the instruments is characteristic for his concertos.
