The Brunettes repertoire of popular XVIIth and XVIIIth century songs and refrains featured in this recording is an important part of the French musical landscape, although it has so far not reached much attention. The main reason is that it is fragile and discreet. No great displays, no feathers, no pomp! Only charm, lightness and touchingly naïve; timeless French "esprit"! Song and dance - and it's not surprising that so many dances are also songs - share a fundamental intolerance to complexity, to mannerism as stated by Montéclair in his foreword to this collection. Their very function implies simplicity. But if their complexity is invisible, it is nevertheless real and so they've been an important feature in teaching and the formation of the nation's musical tastes.
