Described by Hans Richter as "The greatest symphony of modern times", Elgar's 1st has been established in the concert repertoire for over one hundred years. "In The South" (Alasssio) is termed a concert overture but is in effect a gloriously expansive tone poem based on Elgar's time in Italy in the early 1900's. Again Sir Neville Marriner and the ASMF provide outstanding performances of these key Elgar works.
