"This album follows a real change in society with the rise of the middle class in pre-Renaissance Germany. In this constantly evolving setting, music occupied a thoroughly enviable place. The Ferrara Ensemble is both the depository and the reflection of this bouquet of tendencies and emotions, and its expressive palette is at ease in every situation; Crawford Young, from his lute, attends to the ensemble's musicality, which is never at fault."
Roger Tellart, Diapason, January 1996 - Diapason d'or of the Year 1995-96

A glimpse into the musical taste of the educated
merchant class in fifteenth-century
German cities is provided by song anthologies
- Liederbücher - which are the focus of this
program of the Ferrara Ensemble. Both the
supereminence of German instrumentalists,
famous throughout Europe since the fourteenth-
century, and the birth of the polyphonic
Tenorlied are themes of this recording, with
its sound-picture blending the fading Age of
Chivalry with the new spirit of Renaissance
Humanism.
Long overdue for re-release. Diapason d'or
de l'année 1995-96, this milestone of the
Arcana catalogue returns with new artwork,
new packaging (digipack) and a new bar-code
number.
