"Glow" is pianist Pablo Held's 3rd CD for Pirouet Records - this time with a larger group and more unorthodox instrumentation. Pablo Held is a unique talent. Born in December, 1986, his first two Pirouet CDs brought him international attention. And now Pablo Held had four full days, playing with the musicians of his own choosing, to record this new CD. Alongside his regular trio colleagues, bassist ROBERT LANDFERMANN and JONAS BURGWINKEL, trumpeter MENZEL MUTZKE, saxophonists SEBASTIAN GILLE & NIELS KLEIN, bassists DIETMAR FUHR & HENNING SIEVERTS, harpist KATHRIN PECHLOF and Pablo Held's teacher pianist HUBERT NUSS, who here plays harmonium and celesta.
Contrast, color, interaction: these are the essential catchwords that best cover the totality of this CD. Held has composed most of the pieces for this CD. However, with the exception of a few pieces, such as "Secrets" - he came into the studio without written-out arrangements. He wanted to carry his trio concept over to the larger instrumentation (setting): the concept that each one played only when he had something special to say. It almost seems a cliché to label this music an "adventure in sound". But if there is such a thing as a musical adventure, then this CD is certainly one. Pablo Held has achieved a music of enormous richness.
