Jacques Hétu: Légendes, op. 76 / Variations sur un thème de Mozart, op. 79 / Symphony no. 5, op. 81

Three major Canadian orchestras (Orchestre symphonique de Québec, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and Toronto Symphony Orchestra) pay tribute to composer Jacques Hétu, one of the most performed Canadian composers, both at home and abroad. Born in 1939, he died on February 9, 2010, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by family at his home in the Laurentian town of Saint-Hippolyte.
Hétu gives priority to poetry, emotion and coherent discourse; he is also sensitive to the plastic aspects of sonority and the structural rigour of his contemporaries. The elements of Hétu’s style can best be defined as neo-classical forms and neo-romantic expression in a musical language of 20th- century techniques. The three concerts included in this release were commissions and were created especially for special events. With Yoav Talmi, Kent Nagano and Peter Oundjian as conductors, those concerts are special moments now immortalized on CD.
In 2004, a CD of Jacques Hétu music released by CBC Records / Les disques de Radio-Canada won the Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year
