"Sophisticated Giant", originally released in 1977, is the second album by raging tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon (1923-1990) for Columbia, released in the wake of Dexter's triumphant return to America in 1976. This project has been a studio meeting with an extended ensemble arranged by Slide Hampton, based on an idea developed by Dexter and Michael Cuscuna that has been a true labor of love for Dexter. In fact, "Sophisticated Giant" has become a jazz classic and can be considered a highlight of Dexter's recordings on Colombia. Slide Hampton's innovative structures and the participation of such friendly giants as Woody Shaw, Bobby Hutcherson, Benny Bailey, Frank Wess and others, made their contribution to an absolute masterpiece of jazz. This recording is an experience.
