John Eliot Gardiner's interpretation of Bach's Christmas Oratorio has long been regarded as one of the best, as has Christopher Hogwood's Messiah. The Nutcracker with the Kirov Ochestra and Valery Gergiev is also a definitive recording by one of the great Russian conductors of our time. Two added gems are the discs by the Regensburger Domspatzen, a great German choir, and the disc of English Carols by King's College, which is synonymous with Christmas.
