Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704) Desolatione, desolata est terra; Sicut pullus hirnundinis; Tristis est anima mea; Ecce Judas; Cum cenasset Jesus; Quaerebat Pilatus dimittere Jesum; Tenebrae factae sunt; Stabat mater; sola vivebat in antris; Tentavit Deus Abraham; Pangue Lingua en taille à 4 (Grigny); O Dulce, o ineffabile convivium; Fugue à 5 (Grigny); Verbum caro, panem verum; Récit du Chant de l'Hymne précédent (Grigny); O Amor, o bonitas; Elévation pour la Voix Humaine (Lebègue); Prose pour le jour de Páques

Charpentier’s Méditations for Lent, staging the Passion of Christ, are taken from various sources: biblical, liturgical… Between the different parts of his sermon the orator would pause for the performance of petits motets. And that was probably how Charpentier's Méditations pour le Carême were presented. The writing is very sober: the pieces are short, they use limited forces and priority is given to declamation. But what ardent emotion, with heart-rending accents and tormented harmony!
