The discovery, a few years ago, of manuscripts including three new sonatas for cello and basso continuo by Antonio Vivaldi, somewhat changes our view of Vivaldi's Cello Sonatas, of which we formerly possessed only six, published in Paris in 1740. Indeed, these new sources (from the Library of Naples Conservatory and that of the castle of the Count of Schönborn in Germany) not only provide us with music hitherto unknown, but also give us other versions of some of the six Paris sonatas. The availability of such sources is extremely important to our understanding of this music and to the way we now read and revive it. In these sonatas, Vivaldi delights in narration with its many facets. Thus, the discource holds many surprises in store, from moments of tumultuous joy to the sweetest and tenerest of poetry. Moreover Vivaldi shows the art of using simple words to evoke things that are both profound and essential. ~ Bruno Cocset (from the liner notes)(translation: Mary Pardoe)
