The Normans in Sicily
During the winter months of 1921 / 22, to frosty temperatures and in an environment of inflation, Siegfried Wagner composed an opera set in the warmth of the south: Rainulf und Adelasia, his Opus 14. This work takes us back to the times of the last Norman king in Southern Italy in Reggio Calabria in 1194. The composer again wrote the libretto himself, drawing the historical background from Die Geschichte der Normannen in Sizilien, a book by Adolf Friedrich Schack published in 1889 and widely read. After Die heilige Linde (cpo 999 844-2) and Sonnenflammen (cpo 777 097-2) this is now the third complete Siegfried Wagner opera recording on cpo – once again on the highest artistic level. The live recording of the premiere (!) at the Bad Urach Music Days 2003 features great singers such as Elisabeth Wachutka, Frank van Aken, and Roman Trekel, and together with Werner Andreas Albert they guarantee the greatest authenticity. A listening document of the first rank!
