Art Tatum was universally recognised as the greatest jazz pianist of all time with a command of the keyboard that defied description. Nothing seemed beyond his capabilities and his whole being was channelled into music. He spent much of his working life playing in small clubs away from the glare of publicity and Capitol is to be congratulated for putting him in a studio in 1949 at a time when he was in danger of being forgotten. (He hadn't made any records for over two years). Of the tracks here the solos provide the meat of the collection. They rank amongst the finest recordings that he ever made. Songs such as "Sweet Lorraine" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" are three-minute masterpieces and it is doubtful if WC Handy's "Aunt Hagar's Blues" has ever been given such depth of expression. The remaining tracks have guitar and bass added in the trio format that Tatum had used in the mid-1940s. --Steve Voce
