This important album was the first fully realized masterpiece by John Coltrane. The superbly executed and blended ensembles have a haunting quality and each solo is a memorable treasure. This remastered edition has vastly improved sound and two previously unissued alternate takes.
From the opening notes of the first track, this CD is instantly recognizable. The melody of Blue Train, as simple as it is, is extremely effective and carries some serious weight when the three horns are harmonized. Trane's solo is one for the ages and can be considered one of his best.
Moment's Notice is a preview of the direction Trane was taking at this point in his career. The harmonies underneath were, at the time (and still are to most!), very challenging. The tune was named because the other musicians were given no lead time to practice the as-yet untitled chart, so it was dubbed Moment's Notice during the recording session. Trane sails through with his trademark tone and affinity for making all the right choices.
Definitely a must-have for any jazz fan, if only for the title track!
