Symphony Orchestra of the Südwestfunk Baden-Baden / Erich Leinsdorf

Wagner: Preludes and Interludes from Parsifal
Schumann: Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120

American conductor Erich Leinsdorf (1912-1993), originally from Vienna, began his career as assistant to Bruno Walter and Arturo Toscanini at the Salzburg Festival, debuting with tremendous success at the tender age of 26 at New York's renowned Metropolitan Opera House.
After many years as musical director of the Rochester Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Symphony and the New York City Opera Company, and guest appearances with many of the world's leading orchestras, Leinsdorf continued to insist on the highest level of musicianship in everything he did.
Still active at the age of 80, Maestro Leinsdorf remained one of the great podium personalities of our time with a vast repertoire covering virtually every important section of the world's music literature.
This revealing documentary shows Erich Leinsdorf during rehearsals and in two concerts with the Symphony Orchestra of the Südwestfunk in Baden-Baden.
"At 41 minutes Leinsdorf's Parsifal arrangement is only slightly shorter than his entire set of Ring excerpts, and it includes large swaths of continuous music as it appears in the opera. Leinsdorf conducts … with heightened sensitivity to the music's flow and pulse, accompanied by a strong sense of the overall drama, making for an exceptionally vivid storytelling experience." -- Classics Todays
