2011 Juno Award Nominee - INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Wholenote Discoveries - February 2011
Pianist-composer David Braid is a huge talent, his resourcefulness front and centre on “Spirit Dance.” Eight of his originals plus a clever theme-and-variations manufactured from the standard Yesterdays make enjoyable crossover fodder for the Brass, who’ve been around since 1970 and are six-strong here. The music embraces far places and many moods, from the serene Interior Castles to the seemingly simple, delightful Temple Heaven Walk to the contrapuntal trumpet-fortified Prelude for Two Voices to the spiritual, two-part Resolute Bay. Great stuff. Geoff Chapman
Award-winning Canadian pianist David Braid is joined by the legendary brass group
Canadian Brass in a full album of original music written by David Braid. Inspired and
evocative, together they create new sounds that are intimate, spontaneous and warm.
The album has affinities, in its unaffected directness that brings the listener into a new world of captivating sound and fascinating rhythm. Soft and ambient, these ethereal
works will remind listeners of Keith Jarrett or Bill Evans but be taken by their fresh
inventiveness.
This is sure to be on everyone's best-of lists and awards are sure to follow. Compelling artwork by indigenous Canadian Ojibway artist Doris Cyrette completes the
picture!
