Giuseppe Maria Cambini (1746-1825)
String Quintets No. 1, 4 & 23

The violinist and composer Giuseppe Maria Cambini (1746-1825) was in his flourishing years one of the most successful and influential personalities in the Paris music. It was above all the genre of the Symphonie concertante that made Cambini known and loved in France's capital - he wrote nearly 80 works in this genre. Cambini became also a great contributor to the quartet and quintet genre. No less than 174 string quartets and 114 string quintets are known. He composed this works most likely for the rich financier and industrialist Armand-Jean François Seguin (1767-1835) and his upper class audiences.
In contrast to the string quintets by Mozart where two violins, two violas and one violoncello make up the group, Cambini followed the Boccherini tradition of composing for two violins, one viola and two violoncellos, resulting in a distinct treble and bass grouping. The majority of the concerto work lies predominantly with the first violin and first cello, alone or in combination, while the remaining instruments take on an accompanimental role. The light, flexible and enormously varied music of Cambini displays its complete charm only when it is played by «virtuosos» that are not only able to master their instrument, but also understand the art of cooperative performance.
Established in 2007, the Ensemble Entr'Acte dedicates itself to the performance of the extensive chamber music repertoire of the 18th and 19th Centuries. The ensemble appears in various formations and endeavours to free the string music repertoire from the performance and perceptive norms of the 20th Century through a presentation in its historical context. Their interpretations are based on historical performance practices.
