Ricercar takes great pleasure in presenting a compilation of two magnificent cantatas by J.S. Bach to mark its 30th birthday on a CD that also includes the complete Ricercar catalogue. These performances by the Ricercar Consort and its legendary quartet of soloists who have made so many recordings for the series Deutsche Barock Kantaten were created with a team of instrumental and vocal soloists at a time when historical performance practice was completely new and sprang from the most recent research done into the performance of Bach’s cantatas; this style of music making is now completely integrated into contemporary musical life. For me, the recording producer and sound engineer for all of Ricercar’s recordings, these particular recordings provide an opportunity for me to relive moments of intense emotion that were created when the artists’ musical intimacy resulted in takes of an intensity that is seldom experienced. I owe my artists many thanks for these moments of generosity, for their unceasing passion for their marvellous profession, for providing these instants that a CD can ingrain in the soul of those who have listened to it and of those who will listen to it in the future — and not simply for my own almost selfish pleasure in experiencing such instants alone behind the speakers in the recording control room.
