Planet Jazz is a collective sextet which features the work of the highly estimable Peter Bernstein, trumpetist Joe Magnarelli, tenor saxophonist Jerry Weldon, pianist Spike Wilner, bassist Neal Miner and drummer Joe Strasser. It is a quintessential New York jazz group, bebop oriented but with a real blues edge. The material is all originals donated by each member of the band. The exception is the closing track, The Intimacy Of The Blues from Billy Strayhorn. On this track everyone stretches out. This is a group of veterans who have played together for years and it shows. This is a highly satisfying offering and one that should last.
