Ray Charles was best known for his work in the idioms of R&B, rock ānā roll and even successful forays into country. But he also recorded influential jazz albums, including the groundbreaking Genius + Soul = Jazz originally released in 1961, and continuing into the ā70s with My Kind of Jazz, Jazz Number II and My Kind of Jazz Part 3.
Ray performs rendition of many famous tunes on these recordings: Benny Golson's "I Remember Clifford", Lee Morgan's "Sidewinder", Horace Silver's "Senor Blues", and more than holds his own with any organ players of the time. Notable is Bobby Timmon's tune "Moanin'". This version almost equals the original Jazz Messengers' recording but lacks only the incendiary trumpet of Lee Morgan. There are two vocal versions on the first disc, "I've Got News for You" and "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town," which remind any listener that there is no singer with such a soulful voice in any genre. This disc is a must have for any fan!!!
