The definitive West-Coast man, Chet Baker is very well represented in this 3 CD box-set. Baker's years at Pacific Jazz were some of his best, and just one listen will be evidence enough!
The vocal rendition of My Funny Valentine is a true gem. His voice is in fine form and his phrasing is at the top of the heap. The instrumental version of the same tune, with Gerry Mulligan (originally from the album Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker: Timeless), is equally as timeless. Baker swings lightly and effectively with the rest of the band equal to the task. The third CD in this set highlights his collaboration with other heavyweights from the "Cool School" such as the aforementioned Mulligan, Stan Getz, Art Pepper and more.
If you don't have much Chet Baker, this is a great set to get due to its broad scope. If you have some Chet Baker already, there may be a little overlap but you can't go wrong with this set. Highly recommended!
