Clifford Brown, who had the most joyous of sounds on the trumpet, is well represented here in this newly issued set. This is one portion of the mammoth Complete Emarcy Recordings, and thankfully so since it is now more affordable to get these classic recordings.
...with Strings is one of the gems in this package. The Neal Hefti string arrangements are remarkable, no syrupy-sweet coasting here. Brownie navigates each tune with near-perfection, and none of the tracks drift into nice-but-too-long territory.
Study in Brown is worthwhile if not only for his solo on Cherokee. Clean lines, no fluff, and a bright, happy, swinging sound.
Albums aside, this package contains a 64 page book with an illuminating essay and many rare photographs. At this price, it is a must have for even the casual Brownie fan!!!
