The orginal Bach box set by John Eliot Gardiner was a great one, and featured the four major Bach choral works: St. Matthew's Passion, St. John's Passion, Christmas Oratorio, and B Minor Mass. It retailed for around $100. The Arkiv label has taken that box out of circulation and replaced it with this upgraded version. Included are the same four cornerstone works, joined now by the Magnificat and 35 full cantatas. This is Bach performed by the best Bach interpreters. Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir have become THE Bach ensemble, and to get their entire output for Arkiv and Philips in one box is something very special. The roster of soloists is just as impressive with names such as Nancy Argenta, Barbara Bonney, Bernarda Fink, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, Magdalena Kozena, Sara Mingardo, Stephen Varco, and Anne Sofie von Otter. This is a huge measure of Bach, but the best in the world, and at an amazing price. This set is a must-have item for every music lover!
