LORD CLAIRE HERVIEUX FORTIN LAMBERT MARSHALL FISET KUTAN CORBISIERO POPESCU MCHARDY DAHL BELANGER DUPUIS S, ALAIN TRUDEL

Electricity is in the air in this live recording from Dec 6, 2009 in Montreal’s Place de Arts, featuring a broad range of Canadian Born singers and polished Orchestre Métropolitain under conductor Alain Trudel. A number of them are regulars with Opéra de Montréal, while others were appearing with the company for the first time on occasion. The two disc set contains more than its share of stunning performances Rising soprano Raphaël Paquette is in fine form in Mignon’s “Je suis Titania,” capped by a beautifully focused high F in the final cadence. Mezzo Alysson McHardy shows off her husky and lower clarity of voice in Isabella’s Cavitina, “Cruda sorte, ” from L’Italiana in Algeri(she sings the role in 2011 at L’opéra-Théâtre de Limoges). Baritone Aaron St. Claire Nicholson makes a strong impression in Il barbiere di Siviglias’s “Largo al factotum,” the piece de resistance in a role he has taken on for many companies and judging from the audience’s roaring laughter and cheers he nailed the character in visual terms as well. Award-winning soprano Gianna Corbisiero serves up a lovely tone and delectable phrasing in La rondines “Chi’il bel sogno di Doretta.” Mezzo Nora Sourouzian offers a rousing, foot stomping “Prés de ramparts de Séville” from Carmen. And coloratura extrodinaire Aline Kutan brings down the house in Lakmés “Où va jeune Hindoue,” with a gleaming tone and perfectly placed high E. There is some fine ensemble singing as well: Tenor Antoine Bélanger, soprano Marianne Fiset, Corbisiero, and baritone Etienne Dupuis are touching in La bohémé’s Act III quartet, “Dunque è propio finita,” and soprano Caroline bleu and Veteran baritone Gaètan Laperriere turn in on a moving rendition of the Act II scene from La traviata in which Germont convince Violetta to leave Alfredo. Most impressively Sopranos Lyne Fortin and Marianne Lambert team up with mezzo Stephanie Marshall for a glorious blend in Der Rosenkavalier’s Act III trio,” Hab mir’s gelobt.” In all, this is a most welcome release.
